"Expecting all students to learn from the same material is like expecting all students the same age to wear the same size clothing."

~ Madeline Hunter

Welcome! My name is Mrs. Valerie Geen, and I am the Gifted and Talented Teacher at SPS. Mrs. Kelly Waters is now the Exceptional Ed Director. I am entering my 18th year of teaching, and this is my 4th year at SPS! My heart and passion is teaching and helping students reach for the stars, and with our "YET Universe-ity" theme this year, students will be able to take uncomfortable risks and reach levels of mastery beyond their wildest dreams.  A strong education empowers a child and helps him or her make a positive contribution to our world. I am dedicated to growing students through the SPS GT program with innovative and creative techniques.  Our program is competitive and committed to growing our students to full potential. Come join our family!

Gifted and talented kids: who are they?

The following description of the identification process reflects the South Carolina definition of gifted and talented and is in keeping with the National Excellence Report (1995) which states:

"Children and youth with outstanding talent perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment. [They] exhibit high performance capability in intellectual, creative, and/or artistic areas, possess an unusual leadership capacity/or excel in specific academic fields. They require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the schools. Outstanding talents are present in children and youth from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor."
